Blind Person’s Allowance

2 min read

Those who are visually handicapped or blind are eligible for a tax-free payment called the Blind Person’s payment. Along with your Personal Allowance, you are eligible to receive this. Earnings up to £12,570 are exempt from taxation thanks to the Personal Allowance.

No one was exempt from paying the full £2,600 in Blind Person’s Allowance for the 2022–23 tax year. This amounts to £2,870 for the fiscal year of 2023–24.

The Blind Person’s Allowance is available to those who qualify?

Anyone who is officially listed as blind or seriously visually impaired (SSI) with their local council in England and Wales is eligible to apply for this benefit. A medical certificate attesting to this is required. A medical certificate is all that is required to make a claim in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Reserved funds?

Your spouse or civil partner may give you their unused tax-free allowance if they claim it but don’t use it all (i.e., if their total taxable income is less than their total allowances). This is something you can do in the following scenarios:

  • You’ve tied the knot or are legally bound together.
  • You enjoy life with your partner.
  • Only you are blind; your spouse or civil partner is not.

If you and your partner are unable to continue living together, you may be eligible to receive the allowance even after this. This is possible in the following cases: when your partner:

  • Currently resides in a foster home.
  • Is not at home since they are at school or training.
  • Performs duties unsupervised.
  • Is posted for the armed forces.
  • Currently incarcerated.

Fill out HMRC form 575 if you want to move your allowance to your spouse or civil partner for any of the reasons listed above.

What steps must I take to make a claim?

Just contact with HMRC and get your allowance. Please note that this allowance cannot be activated automatically and that you will need to contact HMRC directly.
